It is easy enough to establish your own channel. You may wish this so you can hold your own topic-based discussion or for hosting a private discussion. However before you start a channel on a server you should first read any policies that relate to that network - often these can be found online.
To create a channel you simply use the join command and join a channel which does not yet exist. For example, if I wanted to create the 'stiltwalker' channel and I know this does not already exist then I simply type :
/join #stiltwalker
Once you have created the channel you should give the channel a one sentence topic. This will be displayed at the top of all IRC software when someone joins your new channel. To set the topic use the topic command. In the 'stiltwalker' I would se the topic with soemthing like this :
/topic this channel is for discussing stilt walking
There has been error in communication with Booktype server. Not sure right now where is the problem.
