StreamingConferences: ServerDetails

Basic Factors for Streaming

In order to begin with the streaming process, you definitely need the four basic streaming factors, which are :

  1. IP Number --->  IP is the Internet Protocol. The IP Number represents the address/location of every computer, which is connected to the internet. You need the IP Number (location) of the streaming server so you know where to stream to.
  2. Port Number  ---> Is a numerical identifier for the data structures of the endpoints for host-to-host communications and is divided into three ranges: Well known Ports range between 0 through 1023, Registered Ports between 1024 through 49151, and Dynamic Ports/Private Ports are usually 49152 through 65535. If you are streaming to an Icecast server the port number is usually the default 8000.
  3. Mount Point   ---> Is the location in the operating systems directory structure, where a mounted file system appears. You can think of the mount point as the channel name for the stream. Sometimes you can choose your own mount point, sometimes you will be told which one to use by the server administrator.
  4. Password ---> Is actually the password that the server needs, in order to authenticate your encoders identity.

Generally speaking, the person in charge of the Streaming Server will give you the above details. They are not usually something you can 'work out yourself'.

The Server Side:

When one want to make stream public, there will be a need for good bandwidth, the total number of people connecting to our stream depends directly on the available bandwidth. So let's use an example:

we have one stream that uses 128kbps (explain this unit?),  if we will like to have more than 10 persons connected and following such stream, we will require at least a connection of 1mb real uplink (explain better).

So, whenever you want to have more than 10 persons connected, it might be advisable to get your icecast running on a dedicated server with at least 20mbps and unlimited traffic.
